A Brief History of Sustainability at DU

The Center for SustainabilityÌýÌý

The Center for Sustainability was formed in 2012 after the Sustainability Council realized that a full-time sustainability staff member was necessary to achieve real progress. From a small office space in Johnson McFarlane Hall, Chad King and a handful of students began looking for opportunities to solve some of DU's most pressing issues. This small team started a bike shop, began the Zero Waste hockey program and began engaging campus partners to bring sustainability to their departments.Ìý

The Center for Sustainability quickly grew from a small group of dedicated students and a single full-time coordinator to a lively, accomplished community of passionate undergraduate students, graduate fellows and two full-time staff members.ÌýÌý

The Center for a Regenerative FutureÌý

In the Fall of 2022, a new leadership team helped lead a transition from sustainability to a regenerative future.Ìý A regenerative future focuses on allowing the Earth and all ecosystems to heal in addition to healing relationships with ourselves, each other, and with other species. ÌýÌý

To reflect this transition, the Center for Sustainability became the Center for a Regenerative Future in Spring 2024. For two years, the Center promoted social and ecological justice by empowering the DU community to engage in critical, creative, and systems-thinking toward a regenerative future.Ìý

The Center Today

Today, the work nurtured and led by the Center for Sustainability and the Center for a Regenerative Future continues in many forms. For instance, initiatives launched by students with support from the Center have now been institutionalized. Check out:
